For the first time in 13 years, Soundgarden is back on T.V. The grunge legends plugged in for the premiere of Conan O’Brien‘s new talk show last night, aired on TBS. The band recently reformed to pick up the pieces, and by the look of last night’s show they haven’t lost a bit of their talent.

Lead guitarist Kim Thayil manages to keep his guitar shredding tight and precise while still giving it that dirty grunge sound, a precision that I think many other grunge bands lack. And Chris Cornell still has the same demeanor of his earlier days; he makes being the frontman look effortless, his furrowed brow the only sign of concentration.

Their performance on Conan was brief, but still gave some impression of what to expect when/if the band starts touring again. One can only hope.

I thought it was a pretty solid performance too. Cornell has one of my favorite voices of all time, and Soundgarden as a whole was/still is a major influence on my own writing. I’m glad to see them back together.
